No-exam life insurance

What accelerated underwriting is, who qualifies, how it works, and what the underwriting process looks like if you do not.

Many carriers now offer accelerated underwriting: they decide without a medical exam for applicants who fit their age and coverage limits, using your application, prescription records, driving history, and other databases. Decisions often arrive within hours. Every quote here indicates whether an exam is required, may be required, or is not required for that particular product.

What it changes

No exam does not mean no investigation. The carrier will verify your answers, and if a policy is issued based on false information, it can be challenged for up to two years after issue. The carrier may still request an exam or blood tests if its database search raises concerns; you will then decide whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, applicants under about 60 years old requesting coverage within the carrier's accelerated limits, with no significant health issues and no tobacco use for the past year or longer, may qualify. Occasionally a carrier will accept recent bloodwork from a routine doctor visit instead of scheduling a separate exam.

If you do need an exam, it is ordinarily a 20- to 30-minute visit from a paramedic at your home or workplace in the Orange area, and there is no charge to you. For people in good health, results sometimes improve your rate class, so an exam can actually benefit you.
